The Agony of Downloading Email

October 30, 2005 · Posted in Mike's Blog

Ahhhh!!!! That’s all I can say while waiting for all my mail to be downloaded. Previously, it was just regular routine - 50MB attachments were nothing to worry until last Thursday (Oct 27, 2005) when we switched internet providers - from Digitel DSL to Smart Wifi. Now, downloading 29 emails totalling to 100MB takes almost forever!!!!!!!But why did I switch? The major reason is Digitel’s unreliability. There are times when they are down for 4 to 6 days and imagine how much like hell could that be for a web developer like me who spends most of my time on the internet? But why Smart Wifi and not some other provider? Wanna know why? Well, it’s because there’s no other DSL provider in our area to choose from - it’s either Digitel or Smart. A few months back, it was only Digitel so Smart Wifi looks like a saviour to me - or so I thought.

Anyway, my Smart Wifi package is supposed to deliver 256 kbps of connection as opposed to Digitel’s 384 kbps. I knew the speed would be slower but NOT THIS SLOW!!! My connection right now while typing this message is 40kbps - way below the Dial up Standard. Imagine that!!! The only reason why I’m sticking with Smart Wifi (for now) are the bunch of testimonials I received from friends who said they have never experienced serious downtime with Smart.

So now, I have to think of a diversion while waiting for my emails to download.
