Boxing… Remembering the Old Days

Ok, fasten your seatbelts. We’ll go back in time… The year is 1986, place Iloilo City, Philippines. My uncle was teaching me boxing instructing me the usual one-two punch tricks and the typical legwork. After a couple of weeks of intensive training, my uncle matched with another boy of the same age as me. I wore my boxing gloves and away I went.

One-two, one-two… I got hit in the face. One-two, one-two… I got him in the tummy. It was more of moving around our do-it-yourself boxing ring than hitting each other. Me and my opponent were still afraid. Afraid of getting hurt and afraid of getting scolded by our moms. The bell (actually, it was an ice cream bell), rang.

Round 2! One-two, one-two. This time, the desire to win was greater probably due to our coaches’ encouragements. One-two, one-two. I got him in the face. But he got me on my right side. It hurts but I have to go on. One-two, one-two, then I gave my opponent a fast One-two-three-four hitting him twice in the face, and once in hus tummy. The fourth punch didn’t go through but I knew I won. My opponent was crying.

Two rounds of pain and yet it was fun. The next day, me and my opponent were laughing at each other exchanging jokes again.
