The Home Office from Hell Contest

October 24, 2006 · Posted in Mike's Blog · Comment

Contests are everywhere these days and I was surprised to find out about The Home Office From Hell contest. The idea alone intrigued me simply because my office is a home office and it would be fair to call it a home office from hell.

My office chair is one of the sofas in the living room. My laptop which is basically my main ‘workstation’ sits on a child’s study table and I barely have space to move my legs around. People would often come and since my office is the living room, I have no choice but to entertain them first before I can peacefully continue with my work - that is if I’m still in the mood to work at all.

My home office setup is so uncomfortable that I would often move my ’small space’ from one area of the house to another. At times, I work in the dining room, at times in the bedroom, and most of the time in the living room.

I bet you can imagine how unproductive I can be at certain times and that alone takes a huge toll on my monthly income.

Now, back to the contest. It begins October 23 so it has already started and is sponsored by Office2Share.com. They offer a lucrative grand prize of 12 months of free rent (worth $12,000) and paid trip to New York to have lunch with George Ross - Donald Trump’s right hand man. Other prizes are also at stake and since it’s a contest, I don’t see any reason to not join.

I sure hope that The Home Office From Hell contest takes me out of this home office hell of mine.

Finally, this site is now Text Link Ads approved

October 24, 2006 · Posted in Mike's Blog · Comment

After months of waiting, I finally got an email from Text Link Ads telling me that this site (www.mikelopez.info) has been approved into their system. I waited for that long because this website didn’t meet the TLA requirements before - my PR was low, my Alexa rank was bad, etc. So I did my best to boost this website’s status and it appears that I did good enough.

So, what is Text Link Ads? The best way to define what it is is to tell you what they can do for you and what you can do with them.

  1. If you need inbound links, you can Buy Links through Text Link Ads
  2. If you have a website and you want to make money out of it, you can also Sell Ad Space through Text Link Ads

As you can see, Text Link Ads is a good way to Monetize Your Site either through buying or selling links. Usually, people buy links to promote their products and increase their Google Pagerank and if you’re planning to do just that, then good news because TLA is giving away $100 in FREE Links. Not bad huh?

So there you go, I’m happy and so should be you. If you’re not a TLA publisher yet, then I suggest that you sign up for a TLA account now.

Worst Mortgage Fraud I’ve heard of

October 23, 2006 · Posted in Mike's Blog · Comment

I never knew that a house can be practically gone in a flash. Good thing it didn’t happen to me but it did happen to a very close friend of mine. What happened was that he made a loan from a local mortgage company and as a requirement, the mortgage company asked for the original copy of his land title. He was told to go back 5 days later to finalize the loan. 5 days later, the mortage company’s office was nowhere to be found and they took my friend’s land title with them.

I never thought such scam existed and my friend kept on telling himself how stupid he was.

To avoid such an experience myself, I scoured the web for information and came across a mortgage company at www.personalhomeloanmortgages.com. Their website is a bounty for information on how to avoid mortgage frauds / scams as well as how to properly and safely transact with a mortgage company. They also maintain a forum as well as an extensive mortage directory.

Too bad my friend wasn’t able to arm himself with good information before his demise occured.

Thunar CD Burning Plugin

October 23, 2006 · Posted in Mike's Blog · Comment

One thing I miss in Windows is the ability to burn data CDs by dragging files to the CDROM icon.  This is something that is missing in most Linux file managers.  So far, the only ones I’ve seen that have this feature is Nautilus if you have the proper plugin and Xandros’ version of Konqueror.  Other than that, I haven’t seen any other Linux GUI file managers that support such a feature.

Currently, I’m using XFCE since it’s lightweight and supports most of the desktop features that I need.  Now that XFCE is using Thunar as it’s file manager, XFCE just got better but I think it would be best if a cd-burning plugin would be written for Thunar.  One that supports burrning of multi-session data CDs.

Well, until then, I will need to use Gnomebaker and / or K3B

FrightWorld - The Movie World Premier

October 23, 2006 · Posted in Mike's Blog · Comment

Halloween is getting near and I’m starting to see horror fans wearing weird clothing in the streets. O c’mon, don’t tell me you’re scared. Even kids love it. But do you know that halloween is not just about trick or treat? Do you know that for the Celtics, October 31 marks the last day of the bright half of the year? Furthermore, they believe that November 1 is the start of the dark half of the year. But worst, according to Celtic tradition, the boundary between the living and the dead is blurred on October 31 thereby allowing the dead to pass over to the world of the living. Oh yes, it could be true.

But hey, it’s all folklore ain’t it? Hehehehe. Hahahaha. Bwahahahaha!!!

Before I scare you or anything, I want you to check this out…

If you love horror films like I do then I suggest that you go and check out FrightWorld The Movie World Premiere. It’s more than just halloween. It’s fear on film. I bet that you’ll scream your lungs to death when you watch this.

The event is set for October 31, the very moment when the dead crosses the path of the living and you may never know if that guy you saw who crossed the movie screen is a real person or a ghost. Geez, I know, it could just be an illussion or it could be something else. Anyway, I say, you should check out this cool movie premier or you’ll be cursed!

Bring your girlfriend(s) and boyfriend(s) along with you and scare them to their bones.  Take your kids and show them what fear really means.  And of course take your parents with you and give them the night of their life.

It is also worth noting that a bunch of bands will be participating on this event.  They are (listed in no particular order) Marazene, Any Question, Obomatic, Punch Drunk, Imbued Vagary, Machine Gun Symphony/Charlie Drown, Synthetic Dream Foundation, Darker Days Tomorrow, Apikorism, Sick Machine
Abandcalledpain, Tearwave, Sanity.  So it’s gonna be one hell of a night to be part of this superb event meaning you won’t have any reason not to join.

Witches and their cauldrons are nothing compared to this!

New look for Mikee’s World

I admit it. I suffer from changing templates syndrome - a disease that has been popular ever since the advent of modern day blogging software. It seems that I can’t settle with one template for more than 6 months. Hehehehe.

Well, I did it again, I changed the template and for historical purposes, I am making a screenshot of the current template since I am most likely to change the template in the future. Here’s a screenshot of the template at the time of this post.

Paypal getting serious in the Philippines

October 21, 2006 · Posted in Mike's Blog · 4 Comments

I signed up more than a week ago for a Paypal Philippines business account and though it is clear that Philippine accounts can’t receive money yet, I’m still pleased to know that the Philippines is now at least included in their list of countries. My excitement was even more increased when I got a letter from them telling me that my account was locked and that I have to submit supporting documents to prove the existence of my business. Are they really getting serious?

Here’s a copy of said email.

Dear Michael John Lopez ,

to assess its customers against certain lists of individuals and
entities which have had sanctions imposed against them. PayPal as a
financial institution is required to comply with these regulations in

to lock the account and request further identifying documentation. The
decision to lock your account has been taken solely by PayPal in line
with its compliance policy in regards to the legislation covering
financial sanctions.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. To regain access to
your account, provide the following documentation within the next seven
days:

" A copy of a business registration, certification, or license
" A copy of a utility bill verifying your business address

Include the email address associated with your PayPal account on all
copies.

Fax the information to Attention: Compliance at +303-395-2802 or mail
the documentation to:
